a day and a giveaway: the lower east side

I love hanging out with my sisters, they’re two of my most favorite people in the world. We’re the sort of sisters that are either singing eighties songs together at the top of our lungs, or plotting each others demise. Anyways, a couple of days ago we decided to put off the demise plotting and set aside Dexy’s Midnight Runners for an afternoon spent hunting down our favorite treats in the Lower East Side (LES). We ended up going to The Doughnut Plant, Sugar Sweet Sunshine, and Economy Candy (all famous in their own right).

Awww yeahhhh...

We picked up a tres leches, blackout, creme brulee, and a passion fruit doughnut. The Plant is a place where they ask you “yeast or cake?”- a reference to the type of doughnut that you want. Personally I’m a cake girl, but the fact that I have a choice makes the fact that I can buy a passion fruit doughnut at all even better. Sugar Sweet Sunshine sells the best cupcakes in NYC. I cannot say enough about their cupcakes, they are seriously my favorite (and I live in NYC, home to big CC stars like Magnolia, so you know I’ve had a cupcake or two in my day). Their cupcakes have adorable names like Sexy Red Velvet, Sassy Red Velvet (yes I’m naming my favorites, ‘cuz I’ve got these names memorized), and the Bob. You can imagine how fun it is to say “Yes, can I have a sexy, a sassy, and a bob?”

The last place we went to was Economy Candy. This famous old school candy store has been featured pretty much everywhere. Walking into this tiny store was literally like walking into my 9 year old fat kid dreams (or like walking into Willy Wonkas closet). Sweets literally line the walls, so it’s no wonder me and my sisters dived eagerly into the candy architecture. Sure there were moments, squeezed between other candy connoisseurs, that I genuinely hoped no fire or fight would erupt because I would surely die between the giant Eastern European guy clutching his box of Turkish Delight and a wall of dark chocolate. But candy consumption is not for the light hearted! So I plowed on and retrieved two items from Economy that I just KNEW I had to giveaway here on the nyc talon:

An Economy Candy Belgian Milk Chocolate Smores Bar, and a Blue Q coin purse! The Economy Candy Smores Bar is ah-maze-ing! Whenever I go to Economy I alway pick one up. The Blue Q purse is made out of %95 recycled material, but what really got me was the design. The front reads: “Drive a Hard Bargain, Boss Lady, Zippy, Money Bag”, and the back says: “Show’em The Bacon yer Out There Makin'”- which really sealed the deal for me, I even got one for my mom!
